  •  charming and true (5+ / 0-)

back in the days it cost me over a dollar per minute to call from Germany to the US. Internet was only available through AOL and you had to pay per minute for being on AOL in addition to the phone costs, which were also per minute back then.

    We both spent a fortune.

At least with the vacation time you get in Germany I could spend 5 to 6 weeks in a row here in the US (and still had some days of vacation left).

After two years of that back and forth we too decided to get married.

    •  I read somewhere that the average German (4+ / 0-)

gets 36 more days off, than the average American.
That's why Germans are such travelers...they have time to do it.

      •  yeah, they are spoiled brats, all my German (3+ / 0-)

colleagues coming from Germany to work here in the US get those tons of days and money off from work to do all those huge trips to everywhere around the US and Latin America, I am not one of them. I am a "local" German, meaning I am an "American" in their books. Still get more than most Americans get, but less than those "pure white privileged German imports"...:)

If I am telling they are spoiled and they have no clue what real life is all about, they look at me ... you know like ... I'd lost it.

Who knows, may I did lose it ?

We just settle for it in America. Germans are every bit as productive if not more, but are treated much better. We just settle for shit and then claim we like it.

Sorta Randle's wife is my best friend and she always says that if American's had the time and better pay they would travel more and realize how they are getting the short end of the stick. They would also see other cultures and not be so damn xenophobic. I agree.

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay. Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away. John Prine
