I do wonder sometimes (lying awake at 3 am, knowing I have to get up at 5:30 to catch the bus) if it's helpful to know so much about major catastrophes happening at us, when it's basically impossible to do anything about them. Would I want to know that I'm going to get Alzheimers in 20 years? or die in a car accident in nine months? Or lose my house in a hurricane sometime in the next ten years?  Or die of starvation and drought due to climate change? Or that an asteroid really is going to hit in 2032, ending life on the planet as we know it?

So, you know, maybe shutting down all that science stuff is OK. Then the Texas Board of Education won't have to argue about whether to put the new information into textbooks.
