This is what the Santa Rosa Police were encouraging children to do at the local law enforcement "meet and greet" just a year or two ago. Note, this is a real gun, not a toy one.

The community was upset, and Schwedhelm was the first to tell everyone they were overreacting. He can shove it right now, sorry. This is what they, themselves, were encouraging. SRPD, to be clear, is virtually synonymous with the Sheriffs since they have so many dual hires, and so much of the county is unincorporated, including Moorland. About a mile from this photo (from the article above).

Cops encouraging kids to shoot automatic guns, and then shooting kids for carrying toy guns later? Yes, that makes no sense to me either. They said it was to help the kids be more familiar with law enforcement or something to that affect, and that gun safety was a personal matter with no set age. It's in that, and other related, articles.

    •  So much wrong with this (6+ / 0-)

guns aren't toys. Handle them only when needed, again they aren't toys damn it,  and for gods sake every gun is a loaded gun is a basic safety rule, which means it's pointed down at all times  unless you're going to shoot at something!

I don't blame him: I blame the adults.

    •  Allowing that child to hold that gun at all is (6+ / 0-)

irresponsible, for a police officer to allow him to hold it pointed in a direction that, it looks like a chambered round could hit someone, should be a firing offence. I have never held a gun, but my husband, who was a police officer on the Washington State Patrol for thirteen years, drummed into my brain that EVERY gun is loaded, whether or not it actually is.

                     FUMING !

for police officers, unfortunately. The police here have a very "shoot first, ask questions later" attitude. They also embrace gun culture. So the contradiction in their attitude is pretty striking and impossible to reconcile. Do they want kids to be comfortable with guns or not? Here, they say they do, automatic guns, no less. I remember it was a big hullabaloo. Now, the exact same agency flips around and tries to say, "Oh, terrifying!" I call total bullshit on that. In context, in this area, it's totally common to see kids playing with toy guns and adults playing with real ones (sport shooting is popular, I would say, given our gun sales %, which is way higher than the national average). So yeah, I think they're misrepresenting their position very transparently in an attempt to cover their asses.

Dan wouldn't have ever shot a thirteen-year old boy, point blank, and then kept shooting his corpse. We both know that. We both know that any cop who could do that should be indicted. This agency won't, which is why the FBI has stepped in. Sadly, this isn't the first child to be shot. Andy just happens to be the youngest, and thus the most prominent. I hope this is the LAST child who is killed here at the hands of these... I don't have a strong enough word for them.

        •  Horrifying that the police are so badly trained :( (2+ / 0-)

The community deserves for the police officers to be the best trained possible.

The NRA keeps saying they are the leaders in gun training, but I bet they won't speak out about that officer and how he ignored that child and where he pointed that gun. They just want to talk a good game, not actually speak up about the bad actors.

No, he never would have. I honestly believe he would have died first. I am very thankful the FBI is involved, and pray they will do a good job in the investigation, and prosecute appropriately, Andy Lopez and his parents, and the community deserve that.

                              Thank you for being you,
