  •  The first time I cooked for a love interest, I (10+ / 0-)

    had not one, not two, but three fires (I was not used to gas ovens).  I make gravy once every two years, tops.  But I have learned that I cannot turn away from that bloody pan for even three seconds without ruining the gravy.  And fennel is delicious, but not in a frittata.  

    I am still making mistakes, but hoping I learn from them!

    •  The secret to gravy (6+ / 0-)

      is the roux. A good whisk makes life easier, but you can do it with a regular fork if that's what you have. But no, you must never turn away from the pan until it's done and you can turn off the heat.

      Gravy is one of my best things: I mastered it early & never looked back.

      That doesn't mean I haven't had OTHER kitchen disasters.
