ALEC has the same terminology on the 990 forms for 2011 and 2010.    So maybe not a change.

What is important to know is the name of the ALEC  directors that are listed on the most recent form.

I did read another of the ALEC papers (from the link provided) - on Water.  It is essentially saying that as each city / state / whatever decides to work on water infrastructure replacement - that it be open to 'new technology" - and eventually saying that they want all public water systems to be constructed with PVC.

I'm no structural engineer - but aren't all the pipeline leaks coming from this type of pipe.

    •  Excellent catch - you are correct. (1+ / 0-)

I have the old 990's but never made it past the money part before when reviewing them.  I stand corrected on the newness of the phrase.  Thank you.

the more thankful I was that you posted the info on the 2011 and 2010.  Now I can feel really confident that this was not a one year typo by ALEC or a slip.  It is an intentional statement that they have repeated yearly.  That's important.  Thanks!

They will try to defend themselves by saying they meant "LIMITED representative democracy", not "LIMITED REPRESENTATIVE democracy" as we're alleging.

(The latter meaning that even our weak tea of representation is watered down, not that the government is limited in its power.)

The way to counter their defense is to dig into the huge, widespread and unifying meme of the Far Right that "America is a republic, not a democracy."  You will find that meme repeated by libertarians, neo-Confederates, gun nuts, and Christian Dominionists.  Most Americans have no idea what this means because they don't know how few people were allowed to vote in pre-1792 republics.  Combined this meme with "original intent", and you can bring back every restriction on the franchise that ever existed.  We have to tie ALEC to those extremists.

In the first presidential election, there were only 38,800 voters.  Less than 1% of Americans.  THAT'S what they mean by all their nostalgic code phrases and dog whistled.  They want that back.
