  •  once when I was feeding the turtles in a (7+ / 0-)

small pond near my apartment, there was an anhinga perched on a shore rock nearby, drying his wings. He watched me warily for a bit, then ignored me.  But when the turtles started showing up and getting closer and closer, THAT got under his feathers--he began squawking at them and giving some perfunctory bill stabs in their general direction, then after a time apparently gave up, dove back in the water (he was apparently still too wet to fly), and swam to the other side of the pond.

In the end, reality always wins.
