    the local birds & squirrels love your neighbor's 15 acres of sunflowers.

    So is the combine supposed to separate out the seeds and let the chaff fall?

      They are complex machines that reap, thresh, and winnow in one operation; however, sunflower seeds are easy to separate by gravity, sieving, and proper airflow.  Details are here for those interested.
