  •  Change the damned oath! (12+ / 0-)

I'm sick and tired of insecure christians whining that they're somehow being victimized because they refuse to accept that this is a secular country. The military can change the official oath but have an unwritten understanding that adding "so help me God" is completely optional but NOT required and does not negate the validity of the oath. Contrary to what the christianists may believe the damned thing wasn't written by God so the validity and legality is completely determined by those administering the oath.

JFC this country should have this kind of crap resolved already. It should be a no-brainer what the fair, civilized, and decent thing to do is in this situation. Maybe we should start suggesting the imposition a religious test for joining the military and see how that works out for the religion-pushers.

    •  jayden: this crap started with Reagan's election (8+ / 0-)

      in 1980.
      The Moral Majority.
      Pat Robertson for President.
The Gipper's falsifications of his own and the nation's history.

Grassroots oligarchic theocrats have swung for the bleachers unopposed since 1980.

      Time to shut 'em down.

      •  Yes and no. (6+ / 0-)

One might say that this modern arc of christianism started then, but there was also a strain of it in the anti-communist craze in the previous 50 years.

That's why "under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance in the Eisenhower administration and prayer was promoted in public schools.

Yes, this new militancy and mobilization started in the late '70s, including the takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention by the hard right wing. Reagan and his fellow travellers stoked the fires and led the way to the scorched-earth tactics used by the Tea Party.

why anyone thinks he/she need god's help to obey an oath they take.  Do they think that they are so morally weak as that?

As my father used to say,"We have the best government money can buy."
