most important contributor to the "disappointing" results in VA was, is, and always will be the spectacularly incompetent Terry McAuliffe. Even as he squeaked a win for himself, he's staring down the barrel of enormous Republican majorities in the legislative chambers. Why did that happen? Because genius McAuliffe understands only one campaign "strategy": Collect as many dollars as you can and funnel them (through your cronies, who win big) to useless TV ads. If McAuliffe had taken 50% of his cash and spent it directly on a serious ground game, a la Dean/Obama 2008, the Dems would have picked up several seats as well as the AG, and McAuliffe would have won a dramatic victory.

McAuliffe is an uneducable dimwit -- no matter how many times his strategy fails (even when it "wins" in the sense that the particular candidate scrapes out a victory), he does not learn the lesson, which is that you can't govern effectively if you don't bring your party with you. (Or, if you do govern effectively, you do so by executing the policies of the other party.)

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
