    means being born from a Jewish mother but not a Jewish father, was to protect Jewish women who were being raped and impregnated by Roman soldiers.  That guaranteed that the rape victim and her half-Roman child would be fully accepted in the Jewish community.  

    At least that was the historical rationale given by Reform Judaism in the 1980's when they voted to recognize children of Jewish fathers and non-Jewish mothers as Jewish children, provided the parents raise them in the Jewish faith.  However, that explanation has been challenged by another commenter when I mentioned this before.

      inheritance/heritage thing is one of those holdovers from earlier versions of the culture -- or could also be simply a common-sense understanding of what happens in a very gender-separated culture where children belong with the women until the boys are 'officially' men. Which might've been rationalized away as something else, once those original cultural conditions no longer held.
