    that in a country that at least pays lip service to the separation of Church and State, Catholic Church doctrine can have no place in civil law. The Catholic Church is still free to deny marriage equality with no penalty from the State, just as they deny the Sacraments to remarried divorcees. But when it comes to civil rights, no church should have a say in equal treatment under law. Heck, serving meat on Friday wasn't banned in the pre-Vatican II era; non-Catholics could still get their steak on. (Though many restaurants at least made clam chowder available as the Friday soup du jour.)

    In short, most in the pew Catholics are smarter than most members of the Catholic hierarchy.
