Look at a 2012 Presidential Election map by county, and you'll see:

    - Pennsylvania is red outside of its major metropolitan areas (Philly, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Scranton)
    - Ohio is blue like Lake Erie, red downstate
    - In Illinois, it's the northwest and northeast (Chicago) corners of the state
    - California is blue along the coast, but east of the Diablo Range it's Repub Red.
    - Washington is baby blue west of the Cascades, ruby red east
    - Oregon has a blue zone bounded by the Columbia River
    - Colorado's reddest areas are the northeast part of the state. Guess where the counties that voted to secede are?
    - Nevada is Democratic Las Vegas and Reno, Republican everything else
    - Finally, Virginia might be the most polarized blue state of all in terms of being a mix of urban blue and rural red communities. And its blue areas are heavily centered in the northern parts of the state around DC and along the coast.

If you're a fan of Naked Capitalism, search for an article written just after the 2012 elections, discussing how basically all of rural America went red and urban America blue.

    •  northwest corner of IL isn't particularly blue (1+ / 0-)

Jo Daviess County, the NW corner, is pretty swingy...went for Bush and Obama IIRC. at any rate it's a small rural county.

the main Dem stronghold in IL is obviously Chicago, plus some close-in suburbs. then Quad Cities and St. Louis suburbs. other Chicago suburbs/exurbs and urban downstate counties (Sangamon, Champaign, McLean, etc.) are toss-ups - depends if the blue urban cores can drown out the surrounding red or not.

Living in Kyoto-06 (Japan), voting in RI-01, went to college in IL-01.
