They're selling power to the utility, which sells it to you. Since the power is in the neighborhood already, the utility doesn't even have to transport it through the long hauls which would cost them both in maintenance and line loss. Unfortunately for them, they also don't get to fold in all the other hidden costs and spread your money around to their other business units, consultants, executives and lobbyists.

Unfortunately for ALEC, this message of "PV adopters are ripping you off," might just backfire on them. Could ALEC drive its ground troops to do the right thing for the wrong reasons? I suspect the average misanthropic tea partier is keen on any chance to rip off a neighbor, and some will jump at the chance to join the "boondoggle."

    •  The fact that PV panel owners can sell (6+ / 0-)

power to the electric company means that the company is relieved of the expense of building another power plant to fill the demand for power.

And because the power from rooftop solar panels is used in the neighborhood, the company doesn't need to install or improve long-distance power lines.

That's two ways solar-panel owners reduce the capital expenses of the electric compay.  The company should be grateful.

there is no data that rooftop solar has reduced the need to add peak power supply to the grid. So far the utilities haven't saved any money from the installation of rooftop solar by their customers. What they have seen is lower revenues.
