    The grid, especially since it already exists, is tremendously more efficient and more green than having a battery in every house and not have those houses connected together.

    I'm not arguing against home energy storage, but if we are all connected on the grid we can share power as a community.

    Not every house is sunny. Wind turbines need to be placed in windy areas, which are usually not suitable for housing. Other renewable energy sources are very site specific, like hydroelectric power, and tidal and wave power. We need to use all of these things to get off of fossil fuels.

    The grid needs a lot of updating, and we need a national High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) backbone to move large amounts of energy from places where it can be produced, to places it needs to be used.

    By that I'm not saying that we shouldn't be producing as much of our power as possible locally. Local power is the most efficient power.

    But we have to do it all to get out of the fossil fuel age.

    Bill McKibben calls it "silver buckshot", since there is no single silver bullet.
