  •  I don't mind the filibuster if they would just (8+ / 0-)

have to stand and defend their reasons for the filibuster.  It is all these damn secret holds and allowing any Senator to just signal their intent to do so without making them make an extraordinary sacrifice of time and effort, not to mention being willing for themselves to be exposed for what they're doing, if they really don't have their heart in it.

Look at Ted Cruz's not-really-a-filibuster where he was (mis)reading Dr. Seuss and making a fool out of himself.  Sure his fans ate it all up, but if he were forced to stand up there and defend his point the way that Wendy Davis had to - must stand at all times and not lean or rest, must speak to the reason rather than being able to do things like pure stalling (e.g. reading the telephone book), well the filibuster would not be used often, which would be a good outcome.

I wouldn't mind having a Jefferson Smith standing up before Congress, preventing the little guys from being steamrolled by big business - there are reasons why filibusters were allowed, but it has to become rare, become difficult and to cause the person to sacrifice.

However, this current method has got to end.
