    reason for the 17th Amendment:

    Senate elections had become so corrupt that it was necessary to get them out of the hands of the easily bought legislatures and into general elections - much less likely to be corrupted.

      Pre-A17, if you wanted a Senate seat and had the money for it, all you had to do was bribe enough state legislatures and presto, you had a Senate seat. Or if you wanted to own a Senator, you just bought his Senate seat the same way. It was corruption that simply couldn't stand.
