  •  Rowling was educated and from the middle class... (0+ / 0-)

Her situation is not really rags to riches...

But more like table cloth to rag to riches.

She ended up poor in 1993 after a bad marriage and the death of her mother (which happened during the writing of Harry Potter and which she says caused her to reflect more on Harry's mother than she had originally been doing).

By 97 or 98 she was well off - 98 being when the book rights were sold to the US publisher. By that time she was already winning awards. By 97 the book had come out in the UK, and I'd wager by the end of that year she could clearly see her lot was changing, albeit not the dramatic scope it would soon take.

More important though is that before she fell into poverty in 1993, she had finished an education and worked abroad, including time with Amnesty International.

Her worldview and sense of perspective was not at all like that of someone from the underclasses.

She grew up dreaming and reading fantasy, taking exams, and making plans. Not dodging bullets and grabby-boys in a ghetto.

OMG, like, gag them with a multi-colored spoon. Like, ya know.
