    You got to drive on past. It was usually my job to check in at the gate and go down to death row to interview people.

    Did you know the  blues song "Midnight Special" was about the passenger train bringing wives of Parchman inmates for conjugal visits? The Illinois Central tracks ran right next to Highway 61, with a whistle stop right in front of the main gate.  

    If inmates had good behavior, they could earn the right to have their sweetie come for a conjugal visit in special small houses set up for the purpose and earn trustee status. Heck of a motivation to stay out of trouble. The inmates would watch down the tracks to the south to see who would be the first to hear the locomotive and see the headlight. Knowing that, the lyrics make a whole  lot more sense.
