  •  Reid did not have the votes (15+ / 0-)

because some longtime Senators remember what it was like to be in the minority.  The key among the old bulls (long-serving Senators) was Pat Leahy, who is I believe the longest-serving current Senator.  When he came on board, that legitimized the likes of Feinstein also coming on board.

And I suspect that were Supreme Court nominees included you might not have gotten the 52 -  the question is whether there would have been 50 for a tie-breaking vote with Biden, which would be another can of worms.

Isn't that the trope regarding cuckolded spouses?
I see a similar dynamic. Just as the old guard remembers when they were the minority, they remember the good times, when there was a sense of duty and respect in the Senate. Bernie Sanders ran for Senate in large part because the culture in the House was toxic. Leahy, Levin, feinstein et al were, until this last example, still unwilling to believe that the formerly sane people on the (R) team wouldn't regain their senses and put the nation's business back where it belongs; front and center.
Hopefully, the realizations that prompted this way overdue move will remain with these senators, as the GOP is certain to demand revenge in other ways.
