    I was usually frightened by the illustrations in The Wizard of Oz, when I read that as a kid.  See, the reading experience had been ruined by the movie.  I kept expecting Ray Bolger to tap dance off the page!!

    •  My Oz Books Were Illustrated by John R Neil (3+ / 0-)

      and were most beautiful.  Ozma particularly fascinated me and I fell in love with Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik-Tok, and the Wooden Horse due largely to the way Neil drew them.

      His drawings of Oz creatures aren't nearly as frightening as the hairy three-fingered monsters all over the pages of Seuss.  For some reason they stultified my imagination and repulsed me.
