    Come on..

and no, squirrels are not rats.  They are rodents.  Squirrels are Sciuridae; rats are Murodae.

    •  aren't they both from the order Rodentia and they (0+ / 0-)

only branch off to suborder with beavers marmots and squirrels (and prairie dogs) in one direction and rats and mice headed in another?

but there are plenty of suborders... squirrels are grouped in with the prairie dogs and chipmunks (and only the Mountain Beaver of the Pacific Northwest).. True beavers have their own suborder with gophers and kangaroo rats, then there is the sub-order with all the rats and mice (plus gerbils and voles)...  then a separate suborder for things like chinchillas, porcupines, capybara and the damned nutria (something else more people need to sic their dogs on!) ..and then a really specific one that has springhares in it (which do not look like hares at all.  They are African and look like rats with huge back legs and long furry tails)

Rodentia accounts for almost half of all mammalian life on Earth.
