I work as an 'independent subcontractor' in entertainment. We work all the holidays, for a flat rate. Many times the union hands are making three times what we are, and they're our "hired help." Pretty much no rules for independents, you work when you can for what they offer, and you pay all your own taxes.
And you thought small employers were gods?
The other side of this retail thing is that I have worked for Toys R Us during the holidays. I worked assembling bicycles and toys. That job paid by the piece. I had to work holidays, but I didn't mind a bit, those were the best days. Black Friday was when they put all the little-kids bikes on sale. $5 per bike really adds up when they only take 10 minutes to assemble.
