They're worse than simply ideological; they're lazy CW access-addicts who are afraid of pissing off the loudest barking dogs in the pen, lest their own fragile careers as semi-celebrity knowitalls come to a speedy end. Milbank is just such a rudderless fence-straddler. His columns are mostly phoned-in fluff he picks up on the capitol cocktail circuit and regurgitates with the indiscriminate confidence of a both-sides-do-it, status quo apparatchik, a veteran Villager who rates a fat paycheck and pats on the back from D.C.'s agenda-setters rather more highly than the quality of his "insider" reportage.

The selling out of the Fourth Estate, hand-in-hand with money in politics, is what has precipitated the enfeeblement of our nation's democracy. When wealth and access become the lynchpin of a "successful" journalism career, and we end up with watchdogs watching the watchdogs, the aspiration of a more perfect union becomes fleeting. The multitude of narcissistic hacks inhabiting the Beltway bubble are just a symptom of the corrupting cloud of malfeasance with which our 1-percenter overlords have been tightening their grip on transnational power. We, the people, live within the economic cage of a second Gilded Age.
