  •  Yup, Damn Lucky (12+ / 0-)

McNamara returned to both Vietnam and Cuba to relive the War and the Cuban Missle crisis.  McNamara turned white as a sheet after conversations with former Soviet and Cuban leaders revealed that nuclear weapons were already on the island despite the Joint Chief's assurences to  Kennedythat there weren't any and that an invasion itself would be a cake walk.
In addition, members of the CIA were reassuring the nervous President that the Cuban people would rise up to defeat Castro once the invasion went forward.  For a new President, no pacifist he, to go against  both the CIA and the military industrial complex was a remarkable piece of luck or prayer. We are damn lucky indeed to have had  Jack Kennedy in the WH in 1963.  Imagine if GWB and Cheney had been in.

    •  I'd rather not, thank you. (7+ / 0-)

Just the idea makes me want to vomit.

President Kennedy never trusted his Chiefs or the CIA again. Rightfully so.

    •  It came too damn close to being Nixon-- (0+ / 0-)

another "World War II Veteran" who never saw combat & had no visceral understanding of the horror of war.

And not even the chastened-by-defeats-&-time-in-NYC more-world-wise Tricky Dick of 1969, who was bad enough, but a relatively young (barely 50 as of October 1962) grudge-holder & incipient paranoid only 8 years removed from the Checkers fiasco, when Dwight Eisenhower at the head of the ticket actively participated in his running mate's public humiliation.

As a result of that & other pettiness*, Nixon seethed with resentment of Ike. And that would have cut him off from the one person who might have helped him stand up to the MIC & resist warmongering generals like Curtis Lemay & Thomas Power who were just champing at the bit for a chance to finish off the Rooskies once & for all.

      Too horrible to contemplate.

      RIP JFK.

      * IIRC during the 1960 campaign, after some sort joint appearance outside Eisenhower's Gettysburg home, Ike invited some old friends from the press corps inside. Nixon, left standing outside. remarked bitterly to a reporter, You know, he's never invited me into that house.

The greatest trick the GOP ever played was convincing the devil they had a soul to sell.

    •  I've read or heard Chomsky talk about this (1+ / 0-)

reunion on Cuba also and he says that we actually were all saved from nuclear Armageddon because a Soviet submarine commander deliberately disobeyed Kremlin orders and refused to launch on an American ship maintaining the quarrantine.

I have never been able to track that down but I know I heard Chomsky talk about it, probably on KPFK here in Los Angeles.
