    Why didn't they file for a green card years ago?  Seems like all of this could have been avoided.

      There's a lot of red tape and a long waiting time before immigrants are allowed to get married in the US.

      Years ago, all one had to be was married to an American Citizen and they wouldn't deport them.

        If they have a kid together, they obviously could have gotten married a few years ago and taken care of the paperwork then.  Once again, could have been done a long time ago.

        I married an immigrant, didn't take any time at all.  There's no waiting period for getting married to a foreigner.
