because everyone else wants to go out to eat.

And people who work in hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, and a lot of other jobs have to work because those jobs need 24/7 coverage.

I hate to see retail frenzy at any time of day or year, because it saddens me that so many people view shopping as either a recreational activity or a competitive sport -- and because I suspect much of the buying is either for kids' sneakers (necessities not gifts), or for things that can be sold later at a markup on eBay (Cabbage Patch dolls or whatever it is this year), or for things that no one needs ever. So I avoid Black Friday because it's not my idea of a pleasant way to spend a day.

My family's attitude has always been that whenever we can get together, that's when we celebrate, even if it isn't on the declared holiday. Many years we've had our big Thanksgiving meal on Friday or Saturday; we regularly have our big Christmas meal on Christmas Eve (per European tradition, as did the older relatives who hosted it when I was a child). My mother's birthday falls just after Thanksgiving so we celebrate it when we're together for that.
