See the other diary on the rec list about the flame retardants in sofas? "Endocrine disruptors" do all sorts of things. There isn't clear medical evidence at this point on their role in early puberty in girls, but it's suggestive. On the other hand, we know for a fact that menarche is coming earlier and earlier nationally.

Early menarche has a positive link for polycystic ovarian syndromes and fibroids. Further, the most likely candidate for a cause is environmental estrogens. This would include the superabundance of soy in the environment in our industrial agriculture and food, but it would also include the "pass-through" effect of birth control pills in municipal water supplies. When families have high fat and processed food diets, they get more estrogens, and girls go through puberty earlier and are prone to more issues of ovarian and breast health.

As for this judge, he's not reasoning at all. A child cannot be predatory on an adult, sexually. Lolita herself could not make Humbert Humboldt violate her. As a minor, she cannot, and, as an adult, he is at the age of reason. The judge is ruling on the basis of something other than law.

    Everyone's innocent of some crime.
