    … scarce economic goods.

In the 1960s so-called "hippies" were resented because of the perception that they were "getting for free" what middle-class boys and men could only get by spending money.

Before the Sixties revolution, in the conventional sexuality setup all these sorts of things cost money:
    • movie, dinner, flowers, candy, gifts — picking up the tab for "the date"
    • night clubs, burlesque shows, strip bars, Las Vegas, hiring the services of sex workers
    • (the lifestyle advertised / popularized in) Playboy and Penthouse magazine
    • "James Bond" image — style, snobbery, sophistication, savoir faire
    • the coolest car or stereo or "pad" (dwelling) or whatever
    • well-stocked house bar, bartending skills

Our system seems to depend on nudity being thought titillating, and on middle-class sexuality being mediated by money, consumerism, and materialism.

One hears it said that before any new media technology becomes widespread, in the initial phase it is interest in porn that gets things off the ground.

Frustrated sex drive: an essential factor for consumer demand and economic growth?
