    There is also dogbane or Indian hemp, which closely resembles milkweed, but with reddish stems, and is also toxic.

    When milkweed blossoms it fills the air with the most wonderful fragrance. Leave it to the butterflies and bees.

    I've eaten milkweed shoots, and maybe they were boiled in several waters to remove bitter toxins, I don't recall. Nowadays I generally steer clear of anything that has to be cooked so much that any nutrients are gone anyway, like milkweed or skunk cabbage.
