  •  No, let's not. (8+ / 0-)

Neither he nor anyone else should be drug tested without probable cause.
It is no business of anyone's what is in your bloodstream unless you've hurt other people under the influence. Yeah, pile up a bus, yes, then it IS in the public interest to know if you were drunk or high. But otherwise, GTFO.
Calling for drug testing Congresscritters legitimizes random drug testing, which legitimizes the "war on drugs".
    Sorry, no.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

I see this suggestion often and it's hard not to agree but one step back and, well, just, NO.

But then, the whole Drug Prohibition is awful, wasteful and failing. One TRILLION dollars have been spent on the drug war in 35 years. Now drugs are half the price they were, higher potency and available in every small town and big city in America, FAIL on every level (if your goal is to eliminate drug use).
We have more people in jail than any other country and half of them are incarcerated over drugs. That gets even uglier when you see the racial proportions to it.
The "War on Drugs" has succeeded in militarizing our streets, now even small towns have SWAT teams because of it. And the gangs that sell it here and the Cartels that get it to them are deeply embedded now in society, just like the Mafia was during Alcohol Prohibition.
Our Constitution has been severely degraded by it, from Nixon's "No-Knock" law to Bloomberg's Stop&Frisk.
And an entire industry has grown up around this scam from drug testing labs to rehabs to trial lawyers to prison guards to private prisons.
Sorry, rant over, sore spot (No! Really?).

And Radel should resign when he's done pissing in that cup.

I agree with you in principle--it's WRONG to piss test. But the fact is, it's already reality for many of us and has been for a long time now. As long as that's the case, these hypocrites in Congress who advocate that OTHERS be tested--and even try to pass actual legislation requiring same--then they should too.

And the diarist shouldn't snark on this. If the whole diary is sarcasm, I'll withdraw my rec. It's a serious subject and it's something that as long as other Americans have to piss test for the privilege of MAKING A LIVING, then Congress should too.

This all started with "what the Republicans did to language".

    •  I think it's OK to test the bus driver any time (4+ / 0-)

same as anyone who is paid to make life and death a Congressman.

Accepting a position of trust is implied consent to be tested. Of COURSE you have the right not to be tested just as you have a right not to assume a position of trust.

    •  Well, I think being a member of Congress (4+ / 0-)

provides probable cause that SOME kind of illegal activity is going on.
