  •  OK, this is beyond weird... (18+ / 0-)

It was a Lt. Col. Bill Burkett who in 2004 eventually claimed to have gotten the Texas Air National Guard (TANG) memos re Bush Jr. from "Lucy Ramirez," after he first claimed to have gotten them from former Guard colleague George Conn.  Bill Burkett was the guy Mary Mapes/Dan Rather were working with to expose Bush's less than stellar TANG performance.  Bill Burkett was living just south of Baird, Texas at the time of the whole CBS/TANG/Dan Rather mess. Never was clear just what Bill Burkett's level of credibility was, though I remember I felt sorry for him at the time--he seemed confused and upset, sort of gullible, though not wrong about everything.  I thought at the time that he was trying to tell the truth, but scared and so made some big mistakes.
Now we have a Joseph W. Burkett involved in directing false info to CBS 60 minutes--a former army sergeant and wanabee spy, now vaguely connected to Janus Lares Associates, an Austin-based ammunition dealer, and to Sakom Services, whatever that is, in San Marcos, Texas.  The Stein article says Joseph Burkett is, "from a prominent family in Kerrville, Texas."
A quick net search doesn't yield immediate connections, and Bill Burkett was certainly not well-to-do in 2004, so maybe not from a prominent family.  But what are the odds that two guys named Burkett, both with military backgrounds, both from Texas, both end up contributing to TWO major CBS 60 minutes scandals?!

      •  Yeah--I tried for a bit--the basic task here is (0+ / 0-)

to find out if the two Burketts are actually related somehow--and they're very likely not--but not finding much joy re this on the internet.  Geneology stuff tending to be the commercialized stuff you have to pay for, and I have no idea if that info is legitimate.
