One of my favorite quotes comes from The Grapes of Wrath:

If you're in trouble, or hurt, or need -- go to the poor people.  They're the only ones that'll help, the only ones.
Speaking in the very most general terms, I have noticed the truth of this more often than I could count.  People need compassion to perform acts like your benefactors'.  I have long suspected that growing up without every material want automatically satisfied, in a family and a culture where mutual dependence is necessary, is a better school for learning compassion than growing up in more prosperous circumstances.

We have always been at war with al Qaeda.
