...and which has been pointed out in many other diaries and comments elsewhere over the preceding weeks, in order for those big box retailers to be open for people to exercise their unfettered right to shop until they drop if they wish, lots of people who do wish to spend the day with their families instead have to work for subsistence wages and have no choice in the matter.

Counting Black Friday, there are 26 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.  Anyone who has a problem getting their shopping done in 26 days rather than 27 has a serious problem with time management.  The global economy isn't going to collapse if Mall-Wart has to be open one less day each year.

...not everyone is being "forced" to work on Thanksgiving, in fact, most companies seek volunteers first, so a fair number of people who do work on Thanksgiving choose to do so. It would be interesting to know exactly what percentage of the population feels like they have to work on Thanksgiving.

In addition, there have been many, many people who have worked on Thanksgiving for years without complaining (gas stations, convenience stores, health care workers).

But, then again, there are a lot of people who have to work on days they would prefer not to.

Am not saying everything's fine for everyone. Am suggesting that, while not everyone has the luxury of having Thanksgiving off, Thanksgiving's not necessarily all that "sacrosanct" of a holiday anyway, at least not for most people.

If the argument is that we have become too commercialized of a society, well, that's a valid question and one working of inquiring into. However, Thanksgiving's always been somewhat of a commercialized holiday anyway.
