The one time I've been in the ER in the past 10 years was a Sunday afternoon, when no Urgent Care clinic within 50 miles was open and the insurance company's nurse said I shoudn't wait until Monday morning to see someone. (The company then balked at paying the ER bill -- as well they might -- until I pointed out to them that I had prudently called their 800# first and had only gone to the ER because their nurse ordered me to.) In hindsight, I would have been fine waiting until Monday. And in the ideal world, there would have been a lower-evel option available even on a Sunday.
