Even under the dark days of Pope Benedict, the Church never shirked from charitable responses to people in immediate need. That's fine and admirable.

But it's all after-the-fact, short-term aid. When the Church stops supporting governments that create these conditions of human suffering due to their indifference or hostility to the poor, then we can say we've detected a positive change. The jury's still out on Pope Francis in that aspect.

and the other Eastern European regimes.

like Central America -- where the social justice movement among Catholic clergy and laity was suppressed by the Church hierarchy, which in many instances supported violent rightwing regimes. The anti-communism of the Polish pope was very much double-edged.

      •  One other dimension to the RCC's culpability (4+ / 0-)

is their opposition to family planning. Until the poor can control their fertility, they have little chance to improve their situations.
