    was a rule, but it was not announced as infallible.  The Pope was only decided to be infallible at a council in the 1800s, I think, and by majority (not unanimous) vote of the bishops who attended.  And he's only infallible when he makes a specially labelled pronouncement.  There have only been a handful of "infallible" pronouncements, and all about dogma.  I think one was that Mary was assumed bodily into heaven (pretty goofy, I've always thought).  Nothing about fasting.  

    BTW, the idea that "artificial" means of birth control are wrong, and the rule that priests have to be men and can't marry, and that homosexual sex is sinful, are all dogma but are NOT held to be infallible.
