  •  Maybe Wall St will elect a counter Pope. Like the (9+ / 0-)

French when they Poped up in Avignon because of disputes with Rome.

The German Bishop of Bling might be willing to answer the call of the gilded gods.

    •  Don't laugh, (4+ / 0-)

but I wouldn't be surprised in the sedevacantists like the Pius IX society finally set up their own anti-pope, and you more than a few right wing Catholics recognize him.

Vatican lose by losing the reactionaries? Could they take church property or even much authority with them? Spain in the thirties as a template for conservative Catholic organizations in the 21st century would be pretty scary. But Frances is no Benedict XV or Pious XI.

The conservative cardinals and  bishops might throw in with the growing right wing in Europe. And since these RWers are statists, and not anti government hillbillies, I suppose there is a power base outside of the boardrooms for push back against Frances.

My wife and I just visited the Vatican on a trip to Italy. And even though the churches of Europe are pretty empty the Vat is full to bursting, and many of the visitors are believers. There is obvious enthusiasm for this Pope. Francis's pictures sell like hot cakes and venders can't give away Benny the Rat kitch.

I'm going to dig into the sedevacantists, thanks.

southern OH.  But we probably wouldn't get actual wars like in the old Schism times.   By the time Stalin asked "How many divisions has the Pope?" that was a rhetorical question, but it wasn't in the old days.

I would actually LOVE to see the Pius IX society and co declare a conservative counter-pope, though.  That would force American and world catholics to chose, and most would chose Francis.
