  •  inverting Maslow's hierarchy of needs (0+ / 0-)

The left and the right both seem to want to do that: get people thinking about high-level "crown chakra" notions of selflessness and oneness in the midst of actual material want.  I don't think it works that way.

People who are scared are only going to be interested in eliminating the objects of their fears by any means necessary.  People who are hungry are going to have food first and foremost on their minds, and you'll only get them on board for the Age of Aquarius by promising them food.  People who are alienated and lonely will be easily swayed by anyone who promises them belonging.  People who are put upon are going to desire above all else a release from their labors and obligations.  People who are secure and comfortable are going to start looking for excitement and achievement and as their powers grow, so too do their pride and ambitions.  None of these people would take enlightenment if it were offered to them, never mind ignore the here and now in the hope that their efforts will be rewarded by making it go away.

The conservatives have a leg up on us in that they have a god to let them build a civilization hanging from the sky, where the most high-minded levels of consciousness are already fulfilled, and the task is to work downward and backward from the Source to bring even base physical needs and drives into accord.

Domestic politics is the continuation of civil war by other means.
