    if i have 5 KW i'm grid neutral and half way to
    grid independence.  A small battery and i may be able to
    run grid free.

    If we have storms every year and the grid is down for 2 days, my viablity is very different then yours.

      The point of the original diary was that wind is competetive with coal - apples to apples means having a utility scale wind or solar farm.

      How much do they pay you when their grid goes down?

      Watch how solicitous of point-of-use power if they had to pay a penalty to each customer after every {storm/sunspot/squirrel/car accident} shutdown.
