  •  Make the PIRGOC put mental in their gun safety (5+ / 0-)

    procedures and protocols.

Now they have the 2nd (safety net for sloppy) Amendment, and can't be infringed to actually treat their gun like a gun and not a video game controller.

    •  There are problems with that approach (9+ / 0-)

I'm writing a diary on it. The main issue is that the doctor/patient relationship is a privileged one, and in order to form a therapeutic alliance there needs to be trust/respect on both sides.

The doctor's advice will not be heeded if the patient disagrees... The patient will not tell the truth about what's really going on, if they don't trust their doctor's advice or morals. For the most part, in the US, we don't force people to accept medical treatment that they don't want.

The second issue is that doctors are not qualified to assess whether someone is competent to use a gun safely, or whether they show risk factors for gun misuse or criminal activity, of even what to assess to think about whether an individual is likely to be a responsible or law-abiding gun owner. There are no standards for such decisions.

Criminal laws in this area will make the current problem worse; it will inhibit people from seeking and getting treatment for mental health problems, as well as problems with other kinds of addictions, DV, etc.

Hey Bob, maybe you might want to take a vacation from guns.

On a professional level, how to handle mental and guns.

They don't mention mental unless they are spiking the ball back in our court.

Now they have the 2nd (safety net for sloppy) Amendment, and can't be infringed to actually treat their gun like a gun and not a video game controller.

        and the PIRGOC

        Criminal laws in this area will make the current problem worse;
Lets just start on the surface , some how write a law that says

" if you do something irresponsible with a gun , you will have your  privileges revoked"

        ??

I realize that is vague , but it is a start

          licenses goes a long way.

E.g. Park your vehicle illegally? Unsafe parking is well-defined and easily sanctioned, without anyone going to jail. Fine, temporary forfeiture.

Drop you gun, or it falls out of your bag at the airport? Fine, temporary forfeiture... If we had national licensing separate from ownership, we could sanction proven failures long before anyone gets shot.
