    I've honestly almost never cared at all what any politician actually believes (with a few rare exceptions for actual leaders like Jack Layton) because I'm not under the illusion that the decisions they make have much to do with their beliefs.

    They're constrained on one side by what other politicians will allow them to do, on another side by what they can pass off as legal, on the third side by what won't kill their chances with voters, and on the last side by what won't kill their fundraising ability. What remains (if anything at all) is a tiny, tiny little box, and it's only within that box that their personal beliefs have any influence.

    So what I really care about is influencing the constraints on the box. That's why I think personality politics are generally stupid. I may care about what a politician says in a campaign or from their office, but only because it tells me what kinds of voters and donors they're selling themselves to.
