    you should check out Paul Feyerabend's Against Method. His larger point is that scientific progress doesn't occur in the neat, orderly way we're usually taught. He uses Galileo's conflict as an example and claims that it was the Church, not Galileo, that followed most closely to the scientific method. It's quite interesting.

    As an example, Feyerabend mentions that changes in the brightness of Mars did not follow Gallileo's (Copernicus's?) predictions unless one used a telescope. However, there were big problems with the telescopes of the time, both theoretical and practical. Given the contradictory results, it made sense to give preference to results measured with the naked eye, instead of ones measured through a lens which was known to cause distortions.
