  •  You're a little confused. (3+ / 0-)

First of all, soldiers can't legally be used against American citizens.

Secondly, self defense isn't murder, even against a police officer, in spite of the presumptions of the police state.

Finally, public officials, unless they come out armed, wouldn't be involved in such a scenario.

Trust me, no one wants to go to war with our government, with weapons, anyway. What they want is for the government to fear the people, as they should.

He's fantasizing that we should be ready to fight our nuclear armed military forces.

We were not ahead of our time, we led the way to our time.

      •  You clearly do non understand military coups (0+ / 0-)

First, answer this:  If nuclear weapons is the supreme power of our military, then why didn't Bush just nuke Baghdad and Kabul and be done with it?

If you think our military is just a button push away from nuking whole American cities, then we're under martial law already.

The reality is that the military isn't going to nuke the homeland.  They're not going to carpet bomb cities to put down an armed rebellion.  The truth is most coups are orchestrated by cowardly bullies who don't want a blood fight, and won't act if anyone can fight back.

The easiest way to prevent a coup is to have 300 million armed Americans.  And the quickest way to ensure a coup, is to have the military be the only ones armed.  It is only when no one can strike back that the bully acts.  History has shown that time and time again.

No, we don't have to be able to defeat a nuclear armed military.  We just have to ensure that a coup won't be quick and bloodless, to ensure it won't happen.

citizens..." So, what do you think was happening when Bush I sent federal troops to put down the LA uprising in 1992? Or when President Johnson sent federal troops to restore order in Detroit in 1967? Or when he sent federal troops to 22 cities in 1968 after the death of Martin Luther King?
And self-defense is in the eye of the beholder. You might claim self defense if you open fire on a police officer who crashes through your front door. But more likely you'll be killed. And if you aren't, and you shoot a cop, you will almost certainly spend the rest of your life in prison.
But you aren't going to win any wars if you only shoot when you're directly attacked. Civil warfare requires ambushes, and IEDs...IOW, murder.
Public officials would obviously be targets in a civil war, whether you admit it or not. Otherwise, what's your plan? You're going to huddle in the root cellar while the government officials are out there organizing the population against you?
Look, despite its many flaws, the government of the United States is a legitimate government and its highest officials are elected. It IS the people.
OUR troops and OUR police and OUR elected officials shouldn't have to fear the people. Quit taking your politics from fantasy movies.

something our government seems to engage in with utter impunity these days - part of the reason many people feel a need to be able to defend themselves. And part of the reason many people feel it is not really OUR government.

Believe me, civil war is the last thing I would want. But when the government loses all legitimacy, a direction in which it is headed with stolen elections, gerrymandering leading to unequal and unjust representation, and its continuous illegal actions in violation of the very Constitution which provides it with legitimacy in the first place, the people are going to demand a change. And when an illegitimate government uses force to suppress the people, the people are going to defend themselves. Our government knowing this is our best protection against it ever happening. And a powerful force pushing the government back towards the rule of law.
