    public option off the table before the real negotiations actually started.  What was everyone afraid of, that it would actually work?

      many ways, too.

      And -- this is the real kicker. Never - EVER - do I recall Democrats making an argument to the heart of what used to be the Republican gut:

      "Well, the public option isn't going to cost much in the long run because we all know that the private sector is much more efficient.  In the short run, though, we need a way to ---- hmmm, I don't know, how about this: transition away from the bewildering maze of government programs so that we can Medi this and Medi that into just plain affordable health care"

      A crock, of course, because a well-designed public option -- especially one that offered up actual care -- would clobber the greedy boys and girls of the American healthcare conspir--oops--system.
