You need to realize that the "man price" is a viable, although repellent, legal mechanism. We don't hold to it, and good for us, but it was part of English common law.

Anglo-Saxon law was built on wergild -- the value of a man. This extended across the Germanic nations, and there were various prices/values associated with killings and testimony. For how it could work in practice, see the interesting and great epic Njal's Saga.

I agree with you, of course, that the people who proposed the law were ignorant as well as foolish. They didn't fashion their own ideology cleanly.

The problem that I see, the warning I sound, is that there is a strain in the GOP and the neo-Confederate element of the GOP that would say, "If those people want to be separate, that's fine." That element tends to also sponsor "self deportation" laws, whereby such enclaves and communities are criminalized by some other marker. I.e. they're fine with separatism in gross, because they believe they have the overall power.

"man, proud man,/ Drest in a little brief authority,. . . Plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven/ As make the angels weep; who, with our spleens,/ Would all themselves laugh mortal." -- Shakespeare, Measure for Measure II ii, 117-23
