  •  Sadly, the worst offender I encountered was a D (4+ / 0-)

Plenty of them walked up to the line but he was the only one who crossed it by flat-out offering a yes vote in exchange for sex. At the time he was being groomed for leadership, too, so he was offering more than a single vote (thankfully, he left office quite a few years ago, and for anyone who might know the history, it's not the former D Speaker who was publicly outed for sleeping with a lobbyist). He also made sure to let me know about his favorite kinks--all during our very first meeting at the local watering hole where most of the actual business gets done, or used to at least. Needless to say, I did not accept his offer but he voted yes on the bill anyway, after having been a firm no--and here's the kicker. He crashed the celebration party the evening after the bill passed and asked me if I noticed that he'd voted yes and wondered if I wanted to express my gratitude. I'm laughing as I type this because he was just so brazenly shameless about it, but at the time it was downright awful. House of Cards doesn't even begin to touch some of the shenanigans I witnessed lobbying in what used to be considered one of the "cleanest" statehouses in the country. Bah!

still that guy was a complete piece of work. what is it about politics that bring out the worst in our natures and attracts the worst people? thats a rhetorical question, of course, its the power, perks, and money.

      •  It's not a shock, that's for sure. (1+ / 0-)

Years ago, my then-wife expressed surprise when, in some conversation, I said that I had no interest in being a famous rock star. "I'm married. What would be the point?"

One of the primary drivers of male ambition to power (or other high social status, e.g., pop celebrity) is that it brings extensive sexual opportunity.

I thus expect men with political power to sleep around, even if they are already "committed" to one partner. What I cannot abide is when they use direct application of their power to coerce sexual "favors", or similarly, when they use their power as sexual currency. That is very different from exploiting the glamor associated with power to attract consensual sex.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
