The dead in Kyiv and the freshly beaten in Kharkiv would have their own definitions, I suppose...

      •  you make it sound like there's organized, (0+ / 0-)

continuous fighting between two well defined sides.
The killed in Kiev by sniper terrorists by Yanukovich/Putin order was not 'fighting'
FYI Ukrainians don't have a problem with the Kiev spelling, it's the Russified pronunciation - Kee-YEV or even Kyev one syllable that is galling

First of all, it should be mentioned that the spelling Kiev, (Kiew, Kiow, Kiovia) goes back about 400 years in the English language and others in books and maps. This spelling is based on the old Ukrainian language spelling of the name used for about 1,000 years. So it has some basis in historical origin, tradition and usage in English. In every English language encyclopedia and dictionary today -- I checked sixteen of them -- the form Kiev is the standard spelling.

and now fully aware of what's actually happening there.  Thank god there are folks like you to clear up the confusion created by personal reports from the locus of conflict - not to mention the fine effort you made at wrong-footed disparagement of the POV of someone whose loved ones are in harm's way.

Also, thanks in advance for any grammatical or lexicological corrections you make to my comment.

husband and two boys in Spain.  Things aren't as dicey there now as they were a couple years ago, but I definitely know how you must be feeling.

The Girlfriend will finish school, they will both get out of there. Your family will be safe while hundreds of thousands of natives will continue to live in fear and danger.

It's not a civil war yet, but it is certainly fighting.

And anyway, the violence is surely enough to legitimately worry a mom and a stepfather, no? Do you really want to contest word usage in this instance?
