  •  I suggest that this, which you accurately describe (10+ / 0-)

is part of the last gasp of the racist, Protestant, European culture that brought us the extinction of Native American societies, the enslavement and kidnapping of African people, the notion of exceptional ism in America, and the rest of the package.  Making more minorities felons allows states to keep them from possessing firearms.  Long sentences and greater prosecutions is an attempt to justify the fear that the white conservative feels and seeks to instill on the population.  These unofficial, but thoroughly embedded policies have been followed at least since WWII, when many black Americans came home from Europe and the Pacific with military training, and a sense that Europeans and other people outside the US do not see black people in the same way that the American white conservative does.  Just as many African American musicians and artists fled the US to Paris and other places where racism was not so central to people's self worth, black soldiers and airmen sensed the difference, and would no longer put up with the Jim Crow society and with the protected murder of their fellows.  This war against racism is still being fought, and we can only hope that this is the last major battle in this war.

Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but religion is assuredly the first.
