I had a hot dog in the chamber and hit the button to heat it up, and about five seconds later the oven started doing its best Fourth of July impersonation. It was almost like I'd put a piece of foil in the microwave, but the colored lights and odd sounds were coming from inside the "guts" of the machine.

Needless to say I unplugged it and it hasn't been plugged in since.

It's a total shame. We've had that microwave for about 15 years and it had survived at least two attempts by younger members of the family to put food on a piece of aluminum foil and cook it. I can't imagine what could have gotten behind the wall of the cooking chamber to make it act like that, but obviously I'm not going to take any chances.

The really sad thing is, there are so many times I would like to heat up something quickly and have to do it the old fashioned way. That hot dog? I had to heat up a skillet and cook it  I've gotten spoiled in my old age, but at the moment I'm not sure I have the money to replace it, so I either get to do things old skool or hope someone is willing to freecycle an older but still servicable model.

So this West Virginian walks into a bar and says, "Fix me a Green River."
