  •  In absolute terms, Germany is the biggest consumer (5+ / 0-)

    at about 35 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year (2005 figures)  Italy is next at around 25 bcm, France 11 bcm, Hungary 9 bcm, Czech Republic 7 bcm, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria all around 6.  

    Data comes from a 2007 Norwegian study (the most recent I could find on short notice).  Norway, the Netherlands, and Austria are the biggest competing suppliers.

      hangs directly over the head of Western Europe. The East may use Russian gas to heat their houses, but Germany uses it to power its heavy industry. Decreasing the supply pushes up prices worldwide, which will put the fragile EU economy into recession, and by extension, ours. That's why Ollie's pipe dream of muscular economic sanctions will never happen.
